Short but sweet - Vintage 2021
Blending has started here at the Summerhouse winery, and for us, it’s the beginning of the end of our 2021 vintage.
Drought and frost throughout the 2020 growing season resulted in lighter yields, giving us in the winery high-quality fruit to work with and lower levels of disease to worry about. This pristine fruit has intense and concentrated flavour and aromatics. We’re pretty excited about drinking these wines in a few months time.
The lighter yields created a shorter vintage for our winery team, we wrapped up our grape harvest and the processing of the juice in just a few weeks. After harvesting we press, ferment, and rack off the lees to get beautiful, clear wine out of each tank.
With stage one done, many of our seasonal vintage staff have moved on to their off-season fun. For some, that means back to their regular jobs or into the vineyards to help with pruning and prep for 2022. For others, it’s to the nearest self-contained van for unplanned adventures through our gorgeous local scenery.
The remainder of our crew is now busy taking care of the wine in its early stages and ensuring we get it to the perfect endpoint before we send it your way. Some wine will age in barrel, other varieties are already blending as we prepare them for bottling. It’s the final stage of our journey from vineyard to your tables before we start looking forward to 2022.
