Tell us about vintage 2024 Matt.
Vintage 2024 was incredible, I think this must be one of the best vintages this region has ever seen!
The growing season started cooler, how did the El Niño weather pattern affect this vintage?
The spring season for vintage 2024 started a little cooler than most years, we had a significant frost that affected several subregions, reducing the number of grapes on the vines. The continued cool weather carried on through bud burst to flowering, causing everything to grow a little slower. Thankfully, just before flowering the region started to experience warmer and dry conditions which we would see for the rest of the season, which removed any risk of disease.
How did our fruit cope with the hot, Marlborough summer?
Less grapes on the vines, meant healthy vine canopies, no disease and rapid ripening. This saw our harvest start ten days earlier than normal. The near-perfect conditions allowed us to pick our grapes when perfectly ripe, while the cooler evening conditions preserved the trademark Marlborough freshness and acidity.
